Jupiter Area Guide
General Information
Located in Palm Beach County, Florida, Jupiter, with its population of just over 50,000 is a popular vacation spot for snow birds and Southerners alike. Known for its beauty and its beaches, Jupiter is often referred to as a “beach town” and well known celebrities such as Burt Reynolds have homes in the area. Home of the Burt Reynolds Theatre, Jupiter has the best of both worlds, a vacation haven in a smaller community as well as the close proximity to larger cities for a big night out on the town.
Pack the suitcases with beach wear and come for a visit, we’d love to have you. The only problem you might have is that once you get here, you won’t want to leave! For more information on Jupiter, visit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jupiter,_Florida
History
Originally settled by the Hobe tribe, a mapmaker misunderstood the Spanish spelling of “Jobe” and recorded it instead as “Jove.” Eventually the misunderstanding led to the town being named “Jupiter,” Roman king of the gods which in turn inspired a neighboring village to name itself Juno Beach.
The most famous landmark of Jupiter is the Inlet Lighthouse, which was completed in 1860. Constructed from brick, it was painted red in 1910 due to discoloration caused by humidity and the color stuck. In 2004, Hurricane Jeanne was nature’s sandblaster, removing the paint from the upper portion of the tower. Since then it’s been repainted with a long lasting potassium silicate mineral coating.
