History

The area that would become known as Palm Beach Gardens began as primarily cattle ranches, pine forests, and swampland. In 1959, a wealthy landowner named John D. MacArthur announced plans to develop 4,000 acres and build homes for 55,000 people. MacArthur decided to name the area Palm Beach Gardens and incorporated the city, although it only existed on paper. The 1960 Census recorded that the city officially had a population of one: a squatter whom MacArthur had allowed to stay on his property.

Throughout the 1960s Palm Beach Gardens flourished and by 1970 the city had a population of nearly 7,000 people. As a nature lover, MacArthur purchased two banyan trees and had them moved to the center of MacArthur Boulevard near Northlake Boulevard where they still remains today. These trees are featured on the city shield and continue to remain an important part of the Palm Beach Community.

City growth slowly grew throughout the 1970s and 1980s. The opening of the 1.3-million-square foot Gardens Mall in 1988 started a new wave of development, as did the sell off in 1999 of approximately 5,000 acres in the city by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. For this and more information on Palm Beach Garden’s rich history, please visit: http://www.pbgfl.com/content/72/90/default.aspx
